How to make tainted water safe in Project Zomboid Build 42

Treat rain, river and lake water as unsafe until its item status is clean: fill a compatible container, heat it on a supported appliance or fire, or use Purify Water with tablets. Check that the tainted/unsafe warning is gone before drinking.

Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested

Stable Build 42.20.4 is the current context; the Build 42 features overview documents liquid transfer, and this safe workflow is cross-checked against Build 42.19/community references and the current fluid API. Exact container, menu and heating details can change with patches, settings or mods, so the live item status wins; this is a source-led guide, not a local play-test.

Check the water status before you drink

Fill one fluid container and open its item details. If the item says Tainted, Unsafe or equivalent, keep it away from the drinking action. Rain collectors, rivers and lakes are the usual danger sources. A working tap can be different, but the current item tooltip—not the source’s appearance—decides whether this particular portion is safe.

Build 42 tracks liquids and their state, so treat a full container as a resource that still needs inspection. A plumbed sink is a delivery route, not proof that rainwater has been sanitised.

Heat a filled container on a compatible route

Use one concrete metal-cookware route: Cooking Pot → oven.

  1. Right-click a water source, choose its fill action and fill the Cooking Pot. Keep the filled pot in the character’s accessible inventory.
  2. Open the oven’s inventory and place the filled Cooking Pot inside. Turn the oven on.
  3. Wait until the pot’s tainted/unsafe warning disappears, then turn the oven off, retrieve the pot and open its item details again.

The warning clearing is the completion feedback. A microwave is a separate route for a container the game identifies as microwave-safe; never put the metal Cooking Pot in it. Do not copy a fixed number of seconds from a Build 41 guide.

Use Water Purification Tablets when heat is awkward

If you have Water Purification Tablets, keep the tablet and the non-empty tainted container available and look for the current Purify Water action. Follow the quantity and container requirement shown by the recipe or context menu; this page does not turn an unverified “one tablet per litre” rule into a guarantee.

  1. Select the tainted container rather than an empty bottle or a clean portion.
  2. Perform the purification action and wait for it to complete.
  3. Reopen the item details. The warning should be gone before the survivor drinks it.

Keep tablets as an alternative for travel, power loss or a fire you cannot safely maintain. They do not make an empty container useful until water is actually inside it.

Use the item status as the success check

Success is not “the pot was near a flame” or “the sink filled.” Success is the water item no longer carrying the tainted/unsafe warning. Check the container after heating or tablets, then use its normal Drink action only after the warning has cleared.

  • Keep clean and unprocessed containers in separate inventory groups.
  • When water came through a collector or plumbed fixture, test its quality before making it your drinking supply.
  • If the label is still ambiguous, do not drink it to find out; re-open the item details and use the currently displayed state.

If the action is missing or the warning remains

  • No heat action: make sure the container is not empty, the appliance or fire is an accepted target, and the water is actually in the character’s accessible inventory.
  • Microwave refuses it: switch to microwave-safe ware or use a stove, oven or campfire route; do not force a metal container into the microwave.
  • Purify Water is absent: check that the tablet and tainted container are present and that the current recipe accepts that container type.
  • Status stays tainted: wait for the timed action to finish, inspect the item again, and test a fresh container. A mod, sandbox preset or newer 42.x patch may change a recipe or label.

Older B41 water and plumbing instructions are useful history only. Preserve the exact item label, source, build and action text when a current run disagrees; do not drink an uncertain batch or discard a save to test it.
