Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested
The official site lists Stable 42.20.4 and says Build 42 crops have optimal planting months and months where they can fail. The Agriculture wiki page available for cross-checking is labelled 42.13.1, while current players report that older spreadsheets disagree with in-game seed packets. This page gives a packet-first workflow, not a fixed crop-month table, growth duration, yield or probability claim.
Make the seed packet your calendar
Build 42 is no longer an anytime-planting system. The developer says crops have optimal months and months in which they can fail. Start with the packet in your hand, not a Build 41 memory or an old spreadsheet.
- Read the back of the seed packet and note its sowing guidance.
- If learned, open Character Info → Info → Discovered Recipes and Media → Agriculture and find the crop there. A recent player question shows why names can be easy to miss: wheat may appear as winter wheat.
- Compare the guidance with the current in-game month. If an old table disagrees, use the packet and live tooltip.
“Best month” is not a guaranteed harvest: a crop can meet a later unsuitable window before it finishes.
Build a small, reachable first plot
Bring a digging tool such as a trowel or shovel, seeds and a water container. Choose clear ground you can revisit, protected from zombie and vehicle traffic and close to water.
- Use the context menu on grass or dirt and choose the furrow action, commonly Gardening → Dig Furrows.
- Click a furrow and choose Plowed Land → Sow, then select the seed offered by the current menu.
- Prefer sunlight and ground level for a first test. Greenhouse and sandbox settings can change those rules.
- Keep the first row small enough to inspect on return.
Turn packet notes into a practical calendar
Use a twelve-month note instead of a giant crop table. Give each seed four entries: current month, packet window, next inspection and seed to reserve.
- Sow a small test row before spending every packet.
- Stagger crops so inspection and harvest jobs do not all land together.
- Plan water visits around your loot route.
- Keep fishing, preserved food or foraging as a fallback while a long crop grows.
Players currently report conflicts between older spreadsheets and B42 packets, so do not rely on a universal crop-number list.
Inspect the field instead of guessing
Open the plant information whenever you return. Check water, growth or health, weeds and any named disease. Water with the available container; rain changes the water state but does not replace inspection. Remove weeds promptly, and do not expect fertilizer to repair a wrong-season planting.
- Read the status before a long trip and again when you return.
- Correct dry soil first.
- Remove weeds and note disease messages.
- Check light, outdoor placement and season settings if a whole row declines.
- Keep zombies, vehicles and clearing tools away from furrows.
Diagnose a failed or missing crop
- No Sow option: target a furrow, confirm the seed is available, and check the tool and context menu. Ordinary dirt is not a planted tile.
- Plant stalled or dead: compare the world date with the packet, then inspect water, weeds, disease and light. More watering cannot fix a bad or winter window.
- Whole row fails: check zombies, vehicles, location and sandbox settings before blaming the seed.
- Online table disagrees: use the live packet/tooltip for this save and keep the old table only as a lead; current players report this mismatch.
Preserve the packet name, month and status text before replacing the row.
Harvest with the next season in mind
Use the live plant status to decide when a crop is ready. If you want seed, follow the current plant or recipe guidance for the seed-producing stage; do not assume every harvest returns seed. Reserve some before cooking or preserving the result, then update the packet note when the next season approaches.
