Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested
The official site lists Stable 42.20.4. Its Build 42.20 overview confirms the fishing revamp, surface splashes, noise response and chum. The mouse workflow below comes from Build 42 player reports rather than a current-patch play-test; use the active bindings and displayed feedback in your client. No fixed catch rate is claimed.
Assemble the rod before you reach the water
Build 42 fishing is not the old “make a spear and click the bank” routine. Start with a fishing rod equipped in both hands. Check that a line and hook are attached, then attach bait or a lure before casting. If bait remains visually separate from the rod, treat the setup as unfinished.
- Right-click the rod in your inventory and equip it in both hands.
- Inspect the attachments and carry a spare line, hook or bait for a long trip.
- Use the current crafting search for missing components; Build 42 can search recipes by input or output.
Cast at a visible active patch
- Choose a reachable pond, river or lake tile and look for ripples, bubbles or splashes. The developer says more fish produce more surface splashes, so a completely quiet patch is a poor first target.
- With the rod in both hands, hold right mouse, then left-click the water tile. The cast must enter the fishing interaction rather than receive an ordinary ground click.
- Wait for bite feedback. A sudden pull, sound or tension display means the active interaction has started; a splash alone is not a delivered fish.
Loud noise frightens fish away for a time. Chum can attract fish to an area, but it does not replace an assembled rod.
Alternate reel and release as the fish pulls
When the bite begins, watch the tension meter and the fish’s pull. Hold left mouse to reel. When pressure rises, release or tap right mouse to give line back. Alternate instead of holding one button through a spike.
- Reel while tension is controlled.
- Ease pressure before the indicator reaches the danger band; do not chase a fixed colour threshold across patches.
- Resume short reeling inputs after the fish relaxes.
- When the landing or pickup animation starts, let it finish. Check the survivor’s feet as well as the inventory if the item is not where expected.
“No catch” after a bite means the fish was not delivered; it is different from waiting on a tile with no bite.
If every bite ends in “No catch”
- No fishing action: re-equip the rod in both hands, verify line and hook, and check that bait is attached. Cast at a visible ripple.
- Tension rises too fast: reel with left mouse and release pressure with right mouse. Do not hold reeling through red just because the fish is closer.
- Fish vanishes near shore: step back, keep the landing view clear and wait for the final animation.
- Multiplayer only: compare with a disposable single-player test and record the build, server, mods, bait and result. A separate report explicitly says B42.17, so it is not evidence of a current 42.20 bug.
Do not delete a save or change a branch because one cast failed.
What not to copy from Build 41
Older pages may teach spear fishing or a click-and-wait loop. Current Build 42 references describe rods, bait, tension handling and nets instead; spear instructions are archival, not a reliable B42 task path. Once a fish is delivered, process it promptly and pair fishing with a crop or preservation plan—not a promised daily catch number.
