Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested
Stable Build 42.20.4 is the current context; the Build 42 features overview documents liquid transfer, and placement/testing are cross-checked with 42.20.4 pages, vanilla Lua and the current IsoObject API. Exact range, fixture conditions and menu wording can shift with patches, servers or mods, so the live Plumb action wins; this is not a local play-test.
What plumbing does—and does not do
Plumbing gives an eligible fixture an external water source. It does not turn every source into drinking water. A rain collector can feed a sink while the water remains tainted, so plan to inspect the filled container and continue to boil or purify it ↗ before drinking.
After the waterworks shutoff, a former municipal-water test and a collector draw are different tests. “The Plumb action completed” proves a link was made, not that the delivered fluid is safe.
Start with an indoor fixture and an upper collector
Make the first test easy to inspect. Put the sink or other plumbable fixture inside a building or player-built safehouse, with a water collector on the floor directly above it. The reported 3×3 upper-floor search is centred above the fixture, so an adjacent upper tile can work; treat that range as a placement check, not a universal guarantee.
- Use the fixture’s floor as the reference, not the roof’s height.
- For several floors, pair each fixture with a source one level above that fixture; a roof collector several levels up does not automatically feed a ground-floor sink.
- Do not use a same-floor collector or a distant barrel as your first test. If the layout is not recognised, move the source to the direct upper tile before investigating anything else.
Source above fixture; offset varies. Pipe Wrench → Plumb → Fill, then inspect water status.
Fill the source, then use the Pipe Wrench action
- Put water in the collector before testing. An empty source cannot demonstrate flow, and earlier-version reports about empty barrels are not a Build 42 guarantee.
- Keep a functional, non-broken Pipe Wrench in the character’s accessible inventory and equip it when the action starts. The current extracted callback searches for the wrench and queues the plumbing action.
- Right-click the fixture and choose the displayed Plumb action. Let the timed action finish; walking away or interrupting it is not a connection test.
- Do not move the collector immediately after the action. Test the original pair first, then change one layout variable at a time if it fails.
Menu labels can vary with language, controller layout, mods and patch. The meaningful checkpoint is an available plumbing action on the intended fixture with the wrench accepted—not a generic Fill action on the container.
Prove both flow and source quality
Use a small container at the newly plumbed fixture and choose Fill, not Drink yet. A useful flow test has two signals:
- the fixture actually returns water to the container; and
- the collector’s stored amount changes after the draw.
Then open the filled item’s details. If it carries a tainted or unsafe warning, treat it before using Drink; plumbing is not the sanitation step. Keep clean and unprocessed water separate in storage.
When Plumb is missing or the sink stays dry
- No Plumb option: confirm the fixture is indoors or in the player-built safehouse, the Pipe Wrench is present and usable, and you are targeting the fixture rather than the collector.
- Action completes but no water: fill the source, check the collector is exactly one floor above and within the reported upper 3×3 area, and ensure it was not moved or drained.
- One sink works and another does not: measure the second fixture’s own floor; each fixture needs its own eligible source relationship. Do not assume a source above a different room or storey is shared.
- It worked before a shutoff: compare the old municipal-water test with a fresh collector draw. Re-check source amount and quality rather than treating the first success as a permanent water supply.
- Only a modded or multiplayer world fails: reproduce once in a disposable world of the same build, record server settings/mods and the exact menu text, and keep the main save backed up.
If the current client rejects the reported layout, trust the live action and preserve the exact build before trying a different floor or fixture. Do not import a B41 plumbing fix into a B42 save.
