How to use skill VHS tapes in Project Zomboid Build 42

Use a powered ValuTech or Premium Technologies television, open its device panel, insert the tape and start playback with the survivor who should receive the XP. Read the matching skill book first. On stock Build 42 settings, media XP normally stops at skill level 3.

Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested

The official Build 42 article introduces skill-boosting VHS tapes and the current official site lists Stable 42.20.4. Playback, the modern-TV distinction and the default media-XP ceiling are cross-checked against a Build 42.19 reference, a current gaming guide, and recent player reports. Exact tape effects and level cutoffs are sandbox- and patch-sensitive; this page intentionally does not publish an unverified VHS XP table or claim an independent play-test.

Get a modern television playing first

  1. Bring the tape to a ValuTech Television or Premium Technologies Television. An Antique Television is for broadcasts and does not accept tapes.
  2. Power the set: mains before the blackout, or a generator setup afterward.
  3. Open the television’s device panel, insert the VHS and choose the playback/watch action. Have the survivor who needs XP stay with the television while it plays.
  4. Check the character’s Skills panel after the program. A tape playing or a recipe appearing does not prove that skill XP was awarded.

If playback is missing, check the set type and power before blaming the tape. The labels vary by language, but the sequence is set → power → insert → play.

Read the matching book before pressing play

Read the appropriate skill-book volume before watching. Media XP uses normal XP modifiers, so an eligible book multiplier can improve the early payout. It does not remove the media ceiling or turn a tape into a book.

For a Carpentry tape, use the Carpentry volume for the current band; for Electrical, use Electrical. Confirm the multiplier before playback. Watch with the character who needs the XP; in multiplayer, watch records are player-specific.

Build 42 media XP is an early-game boost

On stock presets, Maximum Media XP Level is 3. Once a skill reaches the configured cutoff, VHS and television lines for that skill stop awarding media XP. Custom worlds and servers can use another value, so check the setting first.

A tape may still play, reduce boredom or teach a recipe while the skill number stays unchanged. Media lines are not a refillable cooldown: do not assume that watching live TV and replaying the same episode on VHS gives two full skill payouts.

Which tapes are worth carrying

Useful examples include the Woodcraft carpentry series, The Cook Show, Exposure Survival, Carzone, and home tapes such as TV Repair, Muldraugh AV Club, Tailoring 101 and Granny Nani. Treat a title as a lead: an episode can mix a recipe and a skill line.

Search video-store-style containers, houses and other loot pools. One shop is not a guaranteed spawn. Keep tapes until you know the skill, media cap and watch history.

Do not import a Build 41 VHS routine

Build 42 added skill tapes and a default media ceiling. A Build 41 list may identify a title, but its XP total or duplicate-watch advice may be stale.

  • Plays, no XP: check the media cap and whether the line was already watched.
  • Not accepted: verify a powered modern television, not an Antique Television.
  • Different number: compare the active book, traits, sandbox XP and exact episode.
  • Modded result: use a disposable test world or copied backup; never remove mods from your only save just to test a tape.

For a dispute, record the tape name, build, media cap and before/after skill values.
