Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested
The current official site lists Stable Build 42.20.4. The level bands and multipliers below are cross-checked against a Build 42.19 reference, a vanilla-Lua data extraction, and a Build 42 PZwiki item page; the PZwiki page is labelled unstable 42.7.0. Names, loot and balance can change in later 42.x patches, so the in-game Read action and Skills panel win if they disagree. This page is not an independent 42.20.4 play-test.
Pick the volume for the level you are training
A skill book is an XP multiplier, not a free skill point. Find the volume for the band you are working toward, read it, then earn XP through the normal action for that skill. Build 42 uses Roman numerals: Carpentry I, Carpentry II, and so on. Older guides may say “Carpentry for Beginners” or “Vol. 1.”
| Volume | Level band | Most skills |
|---|---|---|
| I | 0–2 | ×3 |
| II | 3–4 | ×5 |
| III | 5–6 | ×8 |
| IV | 7–8 | ×12 |
| V | 9–10 | ×16 |
Combat track: Aiming, Reloading and Long Blade use ×1.5, ×2.5, ×4, ×6 and ×8 for Volumes I–V. PZwiki describes Volume I as useful from 0–2, while catalogues label it 1–2; a level-0 survivor can try Volume I and follow the game’s Read result.
Read it from the inventory
- Put the matching book in your inventory and sit somewhere safe.
- Right-click it and choose Read. For a clean test, finish the reading session before training.
- Open the character’s Skills panel and check the displayed multiplier to confirm that the book is active.
- Perform the matching XP action: craft, build, forage, fish or use the relevant weapon.
More pages raise the multiplier toward the table’s maximum. Finishing a book does not destroy it, so you can keep the physical copy for another character.
Book first, then earn the XP
Choose the skill you will train, read its matching volume, then do the XP action while the multiplier applies. A skill book does not unlock a recipe. A recipe magazine teaches a recipe; the book only changes later skill XP.
Build 42 adds lines such as Electrical, Masonry, Pottery, Carving and Glassmaking. Use the exact skill name in the character panel instead of an old “Crafting” or “Farming” label. Combat books intentionally use the lower multiplier track shown above.
What changed from Build 41 guides
Build 41 advice says Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert and Master. Build 42 uses named books with I–V. Do not copy an old item ID or loot promise into a B42 run.
Vanilla books use a 220 / 260 / 300 / 340 / 380 page ladder. Mods can add books or change XP settings.
If Read is missing or the multiplier does not appear
- Check that the skill and volume match; a 7–8 book will not replace the 3–4 book.
- If the survivor is past the band, the book may be obsolete. If it is far too advanced, the character may not understand it yet.
- Check for Illiterate and make sure this is a skill book, not a recipe magazine or ordinary book.
- After reading, check the displayed multiplier in the Skills panel and try one known XP action.
Pages belong to the character and book type. A second copy does not create a second multiplier track.
