How to make wood charcoal in Project Zomboid Build 42

Read Iron Age Blacksmithing, build a Charcoal Burning Pile with a dig-grave tool, then load 2 Logs, 3 Large Branches, or 6 Planks. Choose Burn Wood into Charcoal; each batch makes 12 Wood Charcoal for the charcoal-tag fuel used by furnaces and forges.

Sources checked 11 September 2026 against Stable 42.20.4: Pype’s vanilla-definition page and PZFans’ current overhaul agree on the starter pile, wood batches, and charcoal fuel use; Steam players corroborate the pile interaction, but no new-character play-through was tested. PZwiki’s Charcoal Burning Pile page is scoped to 42.12.3 and its Charcoal item page to 42.3.1, where an old five-log Metal Drum recipe conflicts with the current pile route, so use the installed craft row.

Build the charcoal station, not a regular fireplace

Read Magazine: Iron Age Blacksmithing, then use a dig-grave tool to build the Charcoal Burning Pile. The tool tag includes shovel-class options such as an Entrenching Tool, Spade, Wooden Spade, or Shovel. The station itself has no consumed construction material in the current starter definition.

The wiki/source key may call this a Charcoal Burning Pit, but the player-facing station is the pile/burning-pile entry shown by your build. A normal fireplace or campfire is not the charcoal recipe described here.

Load one of the verified wood batches

Open the pile’s workstation UI and use one of these direct batches:

  • 2 Logs → 12 Wood Charcoal
  • 3 Large Branches → 12 Wood Charcoal
  • 6 Planks → 12 Wood Charcoal

These alternatives let you use the wood form you already have. Do not add a random mixture and assume it will satisfy the recipe; use the exact input row the craft panel enables.

Choose Burn Wood into Charcoal and collect the output

  1. Left-click the completed pile to open its UI.
  2. Select Burn Wood into Charcoal for the batch you have.
  3. Wait for the craft to finish, then move the Wood Charcoal output into a safe container.
  4. Repeat before a forge session so the fuel is staged beside the furnace.

The output is the useful checkpoint: 12 Wood Charcoal from one verified batch. You are not trying to light the wood in a household fire and sift the ashes afterward.

Carry the charcoal tag into a furnace or forge

For the first blacksmithing product, the Primitive Furnace accepts 8 charcoal-tag fuel with 1 Iron Ore for Extract Iron Bloom. A Primitive Forge bloom-to-iron step uses 4 charcoal-tag fuel. The tag is why Wood Charcoal works even though the item name is not simply “Charcoal”; use the recipe row’s accepted items rather than guessing from the label.

Keep enough fuel for the whole conversion. A furnace that accepts the recipe but has too little tagged fuel is a staging problem, not evidence that the pile failed.

If the pile or recipe does not appear

  • Check that Iron Age Blacksmithing was read and that you are in the building/workstation path.
  • Check the digging tool’s condition and whether it carries the dig-grave tag.
  • Check the wood form and quantity against the enabled recipe row.
  • Check the output inventory and the charcoal tag at the destination furnace.

Do not fall back to the older “five logs in a Metal Drum” advice without checking its source version. Later charcoal burners or a Dome Kiln may have different unlocks and inputs; this page keeps the first, independently corroborated pile route usable.
