Metalworking & fuel

How to start blacksmithing in Project Zomboid Build 42

Read Iron Age Blacksmithing, make the Charcoal Burning Pile, and build a Primitive Furnace from 6 Clay, 4 Stone, and one use of a concrete-tag bucket. Feed it 8 charcoal-tag fuel plus 1 Iron Ore to make an Iron Bloom. Masonry 2 and a Stone Anvil are for the next Primitive Forge step.

Sources checked 11 September 2026 against Stable 42.20.4: Pype’s 7 September vanilla-definition snapshot (Steam 24909836), PZFans’ 42.20.4 article, and the official/PZwiki context support this narrow starter path; no new-character build-through was play-tested. PZwiki station pages and the PZFans/Pype build IDs have different scopes, so use the installed craft row if a requirement differs; this page stops at Iron Bloom.

Unlock the starter station recipes

Find and read Magazine: Iron Age Blacksmithing before you count materials. The current starter path uses that magazine for the Charcoal Burning Pile, Primitive Furnace, and Primitive Forge. A Blacksmithing I–V skill book is an XP multiplier, not a station unlock. Build 41 “Metalworking” guides also describe a different skill and item era.

If the station is missing from the building list, check the magazine or the character’s profession-granted knowledge first. Do not replace the missing unlock with a late magazine such as Modern Blacksmithing at Home; that belongs to another forge tier.

Build the Primitive Furnace from direct inputs

For the first furnace, gather 6 Clay, 4 Stone, and one use of a Bucket of Concrete or Bucket of Clay Cement. The recipe accepts either bucket as its concrete-tag input; it consumes a unit, not a full four-use bucket. One full bucket can cover the one-use input for both starter stations.

  1. Place the Charcoal Burning Pile where you can safely stage wood and fuel.
  2. Use the building recipe for Primitive Furnace after Iron Age knowledge is available.
  3. Keep the furnace near the eventual forge so heavy iron does not need to cross the map.

Make the first clear product: Iron Bloom

Put 1 Iron Ore and 8 charcoal-tag fuel into the Primitive Furnace and choose Extract Iron Bloom. The charcoal tag accepts the wood charcoal made by the companion guide, as well as other fuel items shown by the current recipe. The result you are checking for is one Iron Bloom, not a finished bar or weapon.

If the recipe is unavailable, check the furnace type, the magazine unlock, the exact item tag, and the quantity shown in the craft panel. Do not use an old “ore plus a fixed pile of bars” recipe as a substitute.

Continue only when Masonry 2 and the Stone Anvil are ready

The next workstation is the Primitive Forge. Make a Stone Anvil at Masonry 2 from one Large Stone and a hammer or club hammer, then use that Stone Anvil with 10 Stone and one concrete-tag bucket to construct the forge. The Stone Anvil is consumed by construction, so do not plan to keep it as a permanent second work surface.

Once the forge exists, the documented bloom-to-iron step uses an Iron Bloom, 4 charcoal-tag fuel, a hammer or club hammer, and crude or metal tongs to produce Iron Chunks. That is a sensible second checkpoint; stop there rather than promising steel-tier output from a primitive station.

Use the in-game recipe row when a requirement is missing

Build 42 recipes are tag- and station-sensitive. If the craft panel shows a different station, tool, or quantity, follow that installed row rather than an old ore-and-bars recipe.

Keep the first bloom and your charcoal separate until the furnace output is visible. If a server or mod changes recipes, record the build and mod list before asking for help.
