Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested
Concrete example: Fire Clay Pot. Two B42 game-data references agree on its inputs and output; the Primitive Kiln reference is from 42.12.3. Neither establishes a 42.20.4 play-test. Other pottery items can have different requirements.

Starting point: you already have a Clay Pot (Unfired). Loose clay, a mug and a finished pot are not this recipe’s input.
- Bring one unfired pot, a lighter or matchbox, and one log or accepted charcoal item. The B42 extracted recipe lists one ignition input and one fuel input. Keep the ingredients available to the workstation.
- Interact with a Primitive Kiln to open its pottery interface. The older kiln reference lists Fire Clay Pot among its recipes; if your version does not, stop and check its supported recipes rather than substituting a campfire.
- Select Fire Clay Pot. Match that exact action, not the shaping recipe. Resolve any unmet input shown in the interface, then perform the recipe.
- Check the produced item: one Ceramic Pot, no longer labelled Unfired. That output is the completion check; merely lighting something is not.

Only have loose clay? Make the unfired pot first

The extracted Sculpt Clay Pot recipe uses 5 Clay and 250 mL of water and produces one Clay Pot (Unfired). Bring water in a suitable container; an empty bottle is not a water supply.
- Use your placed pottery wheel. The older interface guide instructs you to left-click the workstation to open its menu.
- Select Sculpt Clay Pot, check that clay and water are available, then craft one.
- Confirm Clay Pot (Unfired) was produced. Take that item to the kiln and follow the firing steps above.

A ceramic pot and a crucible are different goals
A Ceramic Pot is the output of Fire Clay Pot. A crucible has its own unfired input and firing recipe: do not use a pot as a substitute merely because both are ceramic containers.
For a crucible, this page only explains the two-stage principle. It does not provide a verified complete crucible recipe. Player discussion of the separate crucible chain ↗
The firing action is missing or unavailable
Compare the blocked recipe against this checklist, one requirement at a time:
- Input: does it require the exact unfired item you have?
- Workstation: does it name your kiln type?
- Fuel: are all required inputs present, rather than an assumed substitute?
- Ignition: do you have a tool accepted by this recipe?
Build 42.20 supports recipe searches by input and output; its contextual crafting options depend on meeting the conditions. A missing right-click shortcut alone does not prove the item is uncraftable. Official crafting-interface overview ↗
For Fire Clay Pot: one fuel group, not two shopping lists
The extracted Fire Clay Pot recipe has a single fuel input accepting the log and charcoal tags. The second database resolves that group to Log, Wood Charcoal, Coke or Charcoal. For this recipe, the references do not require both a log and charcoal.
This is not a rule for every kiln or every ceramic item. If your live recipe differs, its requirements take precedence: note the game version and crafting mods. Do not extrapolate the pot recipe to crucibles or large batches.
