How to move chickens, cows, and other animals

Build the destination livestock zone first. Carry a chicken when pickup is offered; for a larger animal, right-click it and use the rope/attach action shown by your build. Tow an animal trailer, open it at the rear, press <kbd>V</kbd>, and use its animal control to add or remove the animal.

Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested

The official Build 42.20 release post establishes the current Stable branch; PZwiki’s Animal page is older 42.x reference material and its Livestock Trailer page was last revised for 42.16.0. The rope and rear-trailer controls are corroborated by dated player observations, not an official current UI specification, so use the label your 42.20.4 build actually displays. Older transport bug reports and a recent chicken-pickup report are reasons to keep a backup and verify arrival rather than assuming a successful load.

Build the destination before loading

Draw the destination Livestock Zone with the Zoning tool before you bring an animal there. Prepare the food, water, shelter, fence, and gate in advance, and leave room for the trailer to approach and turn. A zone tells the simulation where the animal belongs; it is not the same thing as the trailer, and it does not by itself prevent an animal from escaping.

Record the current build and make a dated save backup before a long move. If loading or towing behaves unexpectedly, you want the original pen and the destination layout intact. Do not dismantle the source enclosure until Animal Info and the destination zone both show the animal after unloading.

Use the displayed rope action for larger animals

A Steam player report says to get a rope, right-click the larger animal, and lead it. Only some animals accept a rope, so use the rope or attach label your build actually displays. If the action is absent, do not invent a different menu item or assume the animal is compatible.

Walk rather than sprinting through obstacles, zombies, or a closing gate. Watch the animal’s stress and keep the route short. The rope is an animal-control step; it is separate from hitching the unpowered livestock trailer to a working vehicle.

Load from the trailer’s rear V menu

An unpowered livestock trailer attaches to a vehicle and adds weight, so inspect the hitch and use a vehicle that can tow it. A player transport discussion gives the practical UI sequence: stand at the trailer’s rear, open it, press V, and choose the animal control represented by the animal icon to add, remove, or inspect animals. The exact text can change; use the menu shown by your build.

Lead a compatible larger animal to the trailer with the rope, then perform the rear-trailer action. Do not confuse a vehicle’s ordinary cargo menu with animal loading, and do not claim that a trailer carries survivors. If the control is missing, stop and check the trailer position, rear access, animal compatibility, and current build before trying a workaround.

Carry one chicken only when pickup is available

Recent player reports describe a different chicken workflow: pick up the bird when that action is offered, stand at the open trailer, right-click it, and use the displayed animal-add control. One July 2026 report says to move one chicken at a time. If pickup is not offered, use the trailer’s displayed control or a verified rope interaction instead of guessing a container action.

A livestock trailer has Food Container and Egg Container properties, while a hutch has its own egg storage. Do not assume that a trailer’s capacity or egg behaviour is identical to a hutch. Keep the trailer open and visible, and check that the chicken is actually represented in its animal list before driving away.

Unload, then verify the destination state

  1. Park beside the prepared zone, open the trailer from the rear, and use the same displayed add/remove control to unload or release the animal.
  2. For a roped animal, walk it through the gate and confirm that it is inside the intended zone before detaching it.
  3. Open the zone and Animal Info panels. Check the animal’s identity, location, hunger, thirst, stress, food, water, and shelter status.
  4. Only after that check should you close the gate or retire the old pen.

Transport reports include rope bugs, vehicle-physics problems, and older duplication cases. If the animal vanishes or the list and world disagree, keep the separate backup intact, do not replace it with the current save, record the build and exact menu sequence, and collect the log. Seeing an animal leave the trailer is not the same as proving that its destination zone accepted it.
