Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested
The official Build 42.20 release post establishes the current Stable branch, while the current PZwiki Chicken Hutch page identifies Stable 42.20.4. The Animal, Chicken, and Cow pages were last revised for older 42.x builds, so their food and trough details are reference evidence rather than a 42.20.4 play-test. A 42.20.4 support report also describes chickens disappearing without a trace; treat missing animals as an unresolved bug signal, not proof of a feeding mistake.
Build the animal zone before diagnosing the trough
Use the left-hand Zoning icon to draw a Livestock Zone around the intended area. The zone is a simulation boundary; fences, gates, walls, and roofs are physical pen parts. They are not interchangeable. A trough or food pile outside the zone may not satisfy the status you are diagnosing.
Open the zone information and an individual animal’s Animal Info panel. Check hunger, thirst, stress, and zone resources instead of judging by whether the animal stands near a trough. Make the zone large enough and leave access for adding feed and water.
Give feed the species can actually use
Food is not one universal list. For chickens, use grass or put wheat seeds and insects in their zone. For cows, try hay, grass, vegetables, fruits, or animal feed. The official Build 42.20 overview also calls out scything grass as a way to feed animals. Start with the example that matches your species instead of moving one animal’s feed list to another.
For a controlled test, put one known feed into the zone or appropriate trough, then re-open the zone and Animal Info panels. Clear unrelated piles while testing so you can tell whether the intended food was accepted.
Treat water as a separate resource
Do not read “food present” as “water present.” For chickens, use a trough or bucket. For cows, a trough can contain either food or water: remove its existing contents before switching, place food through the inventory HUD, and use the right-click menu for water. Follow the resource type and action the current zone or animal panel displays.
Check thirst after supplying water, not just the trough graphic. Historical support note: an earlier official report says ground pots and containers can take priority over troughs. When testing a dry animal, remove stray containers or record them first; do not treat that older precedence note as a current-patch guarantee.
Shelter is not the same as food or water
Food and water answer hunger and thirst; shelter answers exposure and safety. A chicken hutch shelters chickens inside at night or in bad weather, and a roofed area can replace the hutch when central egg collection is not needed. If you use a hutch, keep it in the zone, inspect its info panel, and clean it: high dirtiness can make chickens sick or die. Predator-door behaviour depends on the sandbox setting.
Do not put a hutch requirement on cows or larger livestock. Give those animals a roofed, enclosed area the zone recognises, then verify shelter. A fence may contain an animal while leaving it unsheltered; a roof does not solve food or water.
Use each animal’s status and output as the check
Species and life stage change what “working” looks like. Chickens produce eggs, meat, feathers, and droppings; a hutch centralises egg collection, but eggs can remain in the zone when there is no hutch or no room in its boxes. Cows produce milk, leather, and meat, with output varying by breed, stage, sex, and genetics. Those differences are why you should not apply a cow feed list to chickens.
Animal Care can improve inspection information, reduce stress, and improve yields, but skill is not a substitute for a valid zone. Success is a zone showing food, water, and shelter while the animal panel shows improving hunger or thirst. If an animal disappears despite a valid setup, preserve the build, backup, and log; the 42.20.4 report remains unresolved.
