How to siphon gas from a car in Project Zomboid Build 42

Carry a Rubber Hose and an empty or part-filled petrol container. At a vehicle with fuel, open the vehicle menu (V by default), choose Siphon Gas, pick the destination, and let the timed action finish. If the option is missing, check the hose, container capacity, tank fuel, engine state, and access to the tank side.

Build 42 reference · Not current-build play-tested

Build 42.20.4’s vanilla siphon route uses a Rubber Hose plus an empty or part-filled petrol container; the current menu also checks fuel, engine, inventory, and access. The PZFans reference is Build 42.19 and The Indie Stone liquid article is historical context, so capacities and pump behavior may change with patches or sandbox settings.

Carry a hose and a destination container

For a vehicle-to-container transfer, bring both parts of the setup:

  • Rubber Hose: Build 42 uses it for taking petrol out of a vehicle. Keep it in the inventory or a bag the vehicle menu can search.
  • Fuel-legal container: an empty fluid container, or a container that already holds petrol and still has free capacity.

A standard Gas Can is listed as 10 L and a Jerry Can as 20 L in the Build 42.19 catalogue. Small bottles can be useful for an emergency transfer, but the game’s menu decides which fluid containers are eligible. A container holding a different fluid is not automatically a petrol destination.

Siphon from the vehicle

  1. Stop the engine and stand where the character can reach the vehicle’s fuel area.
  2. Open the vehicle interaction menu with V by default, or right-click the fuel-related vehicle part.
  3. Choose Siphon Gas. Select one eligible container, or use the available fill-all option when you want to queue several.
  4. Let the timed action finish. The vehicle tank loses petrol and the selected container gains it, limited by the fuel available and the container’s free capacity.

If the character cannot walk to the tank side, move around the car and open the menu again. A visible car is not the same as an accessible interaction tile.

Why Siphon Gas is missing or greyed out

  • Need a hose: no Rubber Hose is available to the vehicle menu.
  • No destination: every empty fluid container is absent, full, or holding a different fluid; a partial petrol container must still have room.
  • No fuel: the vehicle tank is empty, so there is nothing to transfer.
  • Engine state: the vehicle is still started; turn it off before checking the menu.
  • Inventory or path: the inventory is full or the character cannot reach a free tile at the fuel area.

Change one condition at a time, then close and reopen the vehicle menu so eligibility is recalculated. If a partial petrol container has no free capacity, choose an empty container instead of trying to force the transfer.

Siphon, Take Fuel, and Add Gasoline are different

These three actions use similar words but point at different objects:

  • Siphon Gas: vehicle tank → container; Rubber Hose required.
  • Take Fuel: powered gas pump → container; a hose is not the vehicle-siphon requirement here.
  • Add Gasoline: petrol container → vehicle tank; the hose is not needed for pouring fuel back into a car.

Build 42 also treats pumps as a separate supply problem. After the grid shuts off, a pump needs a connected, running generator; powering a pump does not refill a finite tank. If the pump is the object you are standing beside, use the pump action rather than looking for Siphon Gas.

When an old guide says “a can is enough”

Many Build 41 guides say a can is enough. That is the part that traps returning players: in Build 42, the vehicle siphon route checks for a Rubber Hose. The newer fluid-container system also permits a petrol container with spare capacity, so an already half-full can does not have to be emptied first.

If the menu still hides Siphon Gas, turn the engine off, stand by the tank side, and reopen the menu after checking the hose and destination container. Loot tables, pump supplies, and sandbox settings vary; this page does not promise a fixed spawn location for either tool.
